Positive Connections Family Counseling Services offers outpatient counseling services to children, ages 3 – 21, and their families at our Fair Lawn and South Orange locations. We work together with children, teenagers and their families to provide them with the tools and support they need to cope with future challenges and live full and productive lives.

Our Clinicians also provide specialized counseling for adoptive and kinship families, who often face a unique variety of emotional challenges, including identity issues; loss and separation; curiosity about origins, and feelings of difference.

*Children’s Aid and Family Services is an Intensive In-Community Service provider within the State of New Jersey Department of Children and Families and provides these services to adoptive and kinship families.

About Our Services

Our team of experienced and compassionate professionals will provide your child and family with services designed to overcome a wide range of emotional, behavioral and relationship problems. Our staff is comprised of licensed clinicians with experience in various types of therapies.

At the Positive Connections Family Counseling Services, we offer:

Intake Session

This is the initial meeting between the therapist and client. It is during the Intake Session that the therapist gets to know the client and determines the client’s therapeutic goals. Our therapists will work with you to create a treatment plan that is focused on your goals and emphasizes growing the strengths of everyone involved in the sessions.

Therapeutic Techniques

At Positive Connections Family Counseling Services, our therapeutic techniques incorporate a holistic and humanistic approach that supports the emotional and behavioral health and functioning of family members.

Our Therapies Include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This is generally a short-term treatment that focuses on the ways a person’s thoughts, emotions and behaviors are connected and how they affect one another.

Child Centered Therapy and Play Therapy

It is often beyond a child’s capabilities to fully discuss the challenges he or she is facing. Play therapy helps children to more easily express their experiences, feelings and perceptions. Through play therapy, children can learn to better communicate with others, express their feelings appropriately, and develop better problem-solving skills.

Family Therapy and Parent Support and Guidance

Family members are interconnected; the behavior and actions of each family member affects the health of each individual member as well as the family as a whole. Family therapists avoid blaming family members, and work with the family on different, healthier ways of interacting with each other.

Psychiatric Services

Referral and help connecting, as needed, to other services that offer support, including psychiatric services.
